Goodwin's Theory

In this post I explore Andrew Goodwin's media theory Goodwin's theory suggests that there are 5 key aspects to a music video; - Thought through beat - Relationship between song and visuals - Narrative and performance of the song  - Technical - Star Image Thought Through Beat This consists of analysing music structure and understanding chorus and verses, recognising the artists voice as unique, and understanding the story that is being told, and the music video is a visual aid to help amplify this story. Relationship between song and visuals Concept of Illistration The concept of illistration is the simplest of the three concepts. It concerns visually presenting the lyrics, taking the song literally and creating it visually. Often the artist(s) can also be seen singing and/or performing the song, also the lyrics may be presented on screen. In this post I discuss the Codes and Conventions of Music Videos, and the typical conventions in particular genres of music Mise-en-Scene In any media product, mise-en-scene is a vital convention to the sucess of the product. This includes the arrangement of actors/performers, props, setting. All of these work hand in hand with the lighting present to create the desired theme and atmosphere, while (in the case of the narrative genre) helping plant enigma codes refrencing the plot/narrative. Costume also comes under the covention of mise-en-scene, as the choice of clothing and makeup, and just generally the appearence of the character, impacts the ambience and aesthetic of the music video. Camera Shots and Movements The use and variation of camera shots and movement is an imperitive factor in creating music videos. While long and mid shots, birds eye, craning shots and two shots are used to establish characters, setting and location, commonly used in ‘as live’ and ‘interpretive’ mus

However, in this post I will be taking a step back and researching the origin and history of music videos. Arguably the root of the music video industry came with the arrival of “talkies” in 1926. Talkies – A Definition “A motion picture with synchronized sound, or sound technologically coupled to image.” Ano ther significant installation to the history of music videos was the dramatised performance of hit song “St Louis Blues” featuring blues singer Bessie Smith in 1929. A development of the earlier mentioned “talkies” was the production of “soundies,” prevelent from 1940 to 1947. Due to the musical films including short dance sequences, “soundies” are arguably similar to
