Costume and MakeUp Research
In this post I explore the makeup and clothing choices in music videos and discuss some visual looks that we would like to include in our music video
Through research of the use of clothing in music videos, I have identified iconic fashion statements made my artists such as Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga etc. They show how self expression in music videos runs deeper than the music itself, and particularly in Michael Jackson's case, his fashion-forward use of monchrome, gloves and leather jackets was iconic. Specific clothing looks that he created, such as the red jacket in thriller, or cream suit in smooth criminal, make the music video more iconic and fans will relate to and immitate this through idolisation, creating more hype for the music video.

One of the strongest connections between music and fashion is their power to influence and become a distinguished trademark for either the artist or the song/music video itself. Alongside this, the use of costume and makeup supports the atmosphere and mood that is built in the video, through both technical codes and symbolic conventions.
The genre of music influences the clothing worn in a music video. For example, there is a distinctive style associated with artists in music videos of the rap genre wearing loose clothing and gold jewellry. Equally, as discussed in previous posts, characters in a music video of the alternative or rock music genre are commonly seen wearing black or generally dark clothing.
We have compiled potential outfits for our protagonist to wear during filming to run in line with the alternative rock genre of our song choice, and connote the emotional disarray that the character is feeling.

Through exploration of the use of makeup in music videos, I have collected these images featuring some iconic makeup looks used in music videos. For example the makeup used by Melanie Martinez in the video for her song 'Dollhouse' is used to alter her appearance to that of a doll. The rainbow paint, symbolic of tears and the lgbt community used in Sia's video for song 'The Greatest' is inspiring in its simplicity but powerfulness in conveying a strong message.
This is a good post Jade and possible could be great if you added images of make-up being applied to enhance characterisation.
