Analysis of "Sorry"

In this post I analyse the existing music video for our chosen song, "Sorry," by Nothing But Thieves

The music video begins with the song name and artist titles in orange typography against a gravel background, accompnied with diegetic sound of the outdoors. As actual shots begin, still before the actual track has started, they are broken up by static noise and images of fire, and the actual shots feature people in distress and chaos, similar to news features when there is emergancy or attacks. When the track starts playing, we see a two-way over the shoulder shot of a couple from the backseat of a car; they are arguing. Continuing to break up these narrative shots of the couple arguing, is blurred footage of conflict chaos and panic, some of which looks as though it is recorded on a home camera and some appearing to be news footage. We then see the artist walking towards the camera, and the camera back tracks to keep an equal distance to the artist; he is lip syncing to the track. We are still seeing flashes of the couple in the car arguing, and begin to see shots of other groups of people in different settings and situations, all in some form of distress; we see a birds eye shot of a man laying in water, a side-on long shot of a pregnant woman holding her belly, an elderly couple in a living room, a man alone in an abandoned building and two men fighting, and more; some of these shots are in slow motion. We see a side-on long shot of a woman sliding down a wall to the floor crying; the fact that the video features many side-on long shots may be used to show how many different characters are featured in the video, and their background and distress. When we switch back to the artist, still lip synching and walking towards the camera, we see people running behind him with stolen possessions or weapons. In terms of lighting, an interesting section of the music video shows the man alone in a derelict building drinking, with dim blue light covering him, and natural light seeping through the windows. This use of artificial light combines with natural light and effectively creates an atmosphere of nostalgia and melancholy. At this point in this video it becomes apparent that the narrative of the video follows an apocolyptic crumbling society; we see people running behind the artist as he walks, carrying stolen items and weapons. Religious connotations are also featured as we see characters praying amongst the chaos, and baptism's occuring in a river. Images of dead animals, derelict/abandoned buildings and car windows being smashed also further emphasise the "end-of-the-world" narrative. Lighting and Mise-En-Scene are the strongest conventions in this video, as coloured lighting is used to convey emotion and mood, and the complex mise-en-scene helps to instill narrative enigma codes. When applying theorists views on music videos that I have learnt through completion of the course, if we consider Goodwin's theory in relation to music videos there is no obvious direct link between the lyrics and the visuals, as the lyrics insinuate relationship issues, whereas the video portrays a crumbling society in a post-apocolyptic situatuion. The video ends with a shot of the artist walking away from the camera; a mid shot from behind the artist, as he walks towards the sunset, and in terms of sound, it returns to diegetic sound of footsteps and nature. While the music video we are in the process of producing doesn't heavily take inspiration from this video, I felt it was important to analyse the exisiting video for our chosen song.
